Those shadows under your eyes can be so frustrating. You try to cover your under-eyes with concealer every morning, only to find the dark circles still showing through. Perhaps people keep asking if you are tired when you actually feel fine. Dark circles are one of the most common concerns I see in clinic here on the Wirral, and they can affect anyone, at any age.
The important thing to know is that “dark circles” are not all the same. Once I understand why yours have appeared, I can create a safe, tailored plan to brighten and refresh the eye area so you look as well-rested as you really feel.
Dark circles are the darker or shadowed appearance beneath the eyes. Medically they may be called periorbital hyperpigmentation, but in clinic I usually explain them more simply as changes in colour or contour in this delicate area. The skin under the eyes is one of the thinnest and most delicate areas of skin on the face, so it shows pigment, blood vessels, and hollowing much more easily than anywhere else.
They are not just a sign of tiredness, although poor sleep can certainly make them look worse. Dark circles can be caused by true pigmentation in the skin, visible blood vessels showing through thin skin, loss of volume creating shadows, or a combination of all three.
When I assess your under-eye area, I am looking carefully at each of these factors. Once we understand the real cause of your dark circles, we can choose treatments that are safe, natural-looking, and genuinely effective for you.
• Persistent dark shadows under the eyes that concealer never quite hides
• A hollow or sunken look in the tear trough area
• Looking tired or older than you feel, even when you are well-rested
• Bluish or purple tones showing through thin under-eye skin
• Brown pigmentation around the eye area
• Fine lines or crepey texture beneath the eyes
• Feeling frustrated when people keep asking if you are tired or unwell
Dark circles can develop for lots of different reasons, and most people have more than one factor involved. That is why they can be so stubborn, and why a single cream or quick fix rarely works.
When I assess your under-eye area in clinic here on the Wirral, I am looking carefully at what is really causing the shadows. Once I understand the specific causes for your dark circles, I can recommend a safe, personalised plan that genuinely brightens and refreshes the eye area, rather than just covering it up.
Sometimes dark circles are not really about colour at all, but about shadowing from changes in facial structure. I see this very often in clinic, especially as we move through our 30s and 40s.
In some people, dark circles are caused by tiny blood vessels showing through thin under-eye skin rather than true pigmentation. This often gives a bluish or purple tone that looks worse when you are tired or run down.
For some people, the darkness is true pigmentation in the skin rather than shadowing. This often looks more brown than blue and can be quite stubborn without the right approach.
Sometimes dark circles are made worse by everyday habits and health factors. These do not always cause dark circles on their own, but they can deepen shadows and make the under-eye area look more tired.
• Chronic sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality
• Dehydration, which makes the skin appear dull and sunken
• Excessive screen time causes eye strain and fatigue
• Smoking, which damages collagen and impairs circulation
Not all dark circles are the same. During your consultation, I will look carefully at which type – or combination of types – you have, because this is what determines the safest and most effective plan for you.
These are caused by hollowing in the tear trough area, which creates a shadow. The skin itself may not be discoloured, but the loss of volume gives a darker appearance. Often, when you look up towards a bright light, the darkness softens or disappears.
In some cases, tear trough filler can be an appropriate treatment for this type of dark circle. I do not perform tear trough filler in my clinic but if this is the best option for you, I will always refer you to a trusted colleague who focuses on this area. Many patients, though, do benefit from improving skin quality, collagen support, and midface structure first, which is central to my Radiance Collection approach of layered, long-term skin health rather than quick fixes.
These have a bluish or purple tone caused by tiny blood vessels showing through thin under-eye skin. They often look worse when you are tired, dehydrated, unwell, or after crying. If the skin is gently stretched, the colour can sometimes appear more obvious.
When this is the main cause, treatment focuses on strengthening and thickening the skin rather than trying to cover the colour. I use regenerative options such as the powerful biostimulator JULAINE™, polynucleotides, skin boosters specifically for the eye, LED therapy, and medical-grade skincare to improve hydration and skin quality gradually.
These appear as a brown or patchy discolouration around the eyes caused by excess melanin in the skin. They are often genetic and more common in people with darker skin tones. Unlike shadowing or vascular circles, stretching the skin does not change the colour.
When pigmentation is the main cause, treatment focuses on gentle brightening and strict sun protection. I usually recommend medical-grade skincare with carefully chosen brightening ingredients, and in some cases light pHformula resurfacing treatments around the eye area where it is safe to do so.
Laser treatments can be appropriate for some patients, and if I feel this would be the best option for you, I will refer you to a trusted colleague. My aim is always gradual, natural improvement while protecting the delicate under-eye skin from irritation or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Most people do not have just one type of dark circle. Often there is a combination of shadowing from volume loss, visible vessels through thin skin, and true pigmentation. That is why dark circles can be so persistent, and why one single treatment rarely gives the result you want.
During your consultation, I assess each of these factors carefully, looking at your skin quality, facial structure, lifestyle, and medical history. From there, we can build a tailored plan that may combine skincare, regenerative treatments, resurfacing, or structural support where appropriate.
Addressing each contributing cause in a gentle, layered way usually gives the most natural, lasting improvement, helping the under-eye area look brighter and more rested over time.
The under-eye area is one of the most delicate parts of the face, so treatment needs to be gentle, precise, and very carefully planned. When you come to see me, I take time to assess your skin, facial structure, lifestyle factors, and medical history to understand exactly what is causing your dark circles.
From there, I create a personalised plan designed around your specific needs. Many patients benefit most from a thoughtful, layered approach over time rather than a single quick fix.
My aim is always safe, natural-looking improvement that helps you look brighter, fresher, and more like yourself, while protecting the delicate eye area and supporting your long-term skin health.
For many people, dark circles are made worse by loss of support in the cheek rather than a problem in the tear trough itself. As we age, the natural fat pads in the mid-face shift downwards and collagen reduces, so the cheek no longer supports the under-eye area. This creates a hollow that casts a shadow.
Carefully placed hyaluronic acid filler in the cheek can restore that lost support. By gently lifting and strengthening the mid-face, the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek becomes smoother, which softens the shadow and makes the under-eye area look brighter and more rested.
This approach is often safer and more natural-looking than treating the tear trough directly, and results are usually visible straight away and last around twelve to eighteen months. My aim is always subtle support that refreshes your appearance without looking “filled” or overdone.
For patients whose dark circles are linked to thin, fragile under-eye skin, collagen-stimulating treatments such as JULÄINE™ can make a beautiful difference. JULÄINE™ works by encouraging your own skin to produce new collagen over time, helping the under-eye skin become thicker, stronger, and more resilient. As skin quality improves, blood vessels show through less, fine crepiness softens, and shadows look lighter and smoother.
Results develop gradually over a few months and can last for up to 2 years, giving natural, long-lasting improvement by genuinely rejuvenating the skin.
For vascular dark circles or thin, crepey under-eye skin, polynucleotides can be a lovely option. These regenerative injections support your skin’s natural repair processes, helping it produce more collagen and elastin so the under-eye skin becomes stronger and slightly thicker. As skin quality improves, blood vessels show through less, hydration increases, and fine lines soften.
Results build gradually and look very natural. I usually recommend a course of three to four treatments, spaced a few weeks apart, with maintenance sessions every 6 months to keep the area looking fresh and healthy.
Skin boosters designed specifically for the eye area, such as Sunekos or Jalupro Young Eye, can beautifully improve hydration and skin quality without adding volume. These treatments contain hyaluronic acid combined with carefully selected amino acids, which act as building blocks for collagen and elastin. Over time, this helps the under-eye skin become smoother, more supple, and better hydrated.
They are a lovely option for patients who want brighter, fresher-looking under-eyes without the volumising effect of filler, and they can be especially helpful for fine lines, thin skin, or early changes around the eyes. Results develop gradually and look very natural as the skin becomes healthier and more resilient.
For mixed-type dark circles, a combination approach usually gives the best results, because more than one factor is often involved. Structural hollowing may improve with mid-face support, while regenerative treatments can strengthen and thicken delicate under-eye skin. Medical-grade skincare can help with pigmentation and barrier concerns.
During your consultation, I will assess each element carefully and create a tailored plan matched to your anatomy, skin condition, and goals. My focus is always on gentle, layered treatment that looks natural and improves the under-eye area in a safe, sustainable way.
